Portland couple wanted for son's fentanyl overdose turns themselves in

Portland, ORLocal News

De’Lone Kelley and Samantha Smith surrendered to Portland police after being wanted in connection with their son's fentanyl overdose. Their son, now five, suffered a severe brain injury from exposure to the drug and is currently in the care of a DHS guardian requiring 24-hour attention. The parents pleaded guilty to assault and criminal mistreatment in March but did not surrender when expected earlier this month. Portland Police disclosed that Kelley and Smith had smoked fentanyl the night before their child's overdose, which led to his critical condition. Due to their failure to surrender, both parents received increased prison sentences; Kelley now faces six and a half years, while Smith faces two and a half years.

Officials emphasized the need for accountability in cases involving child endangerment. The couple's court appearance is scheduled for today, marking a significant step in the legal proceedings. This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding the impact of substance abuse on families and children in Portland.
