Last chance to swim in Crater Lake as Cleetwood Cove Trail closes for construction in 2026

Portland, ORLocal News

After the summer of 2025, the Cleetwood Cove Trail at Crater Lake National Park will close for construction, marking the last chance for swimming in the lake for several years. This trail is the only safe access point to the lake, making the closure particularly impactful for both locals and tourists. Beginning in 2026, crews will commence work on the trail, which is expected to last until summer 2029. During this period, no boat tours will be available, and only scientists will have access to the lake for research purposes. The National Park Service assures visitors that the remainder of the park will remain open, allowing continued enjoyment of its stunning landscapes.

This closure highlights the importance of preserving natural sites while also addressing safety and infrastructure needs. As the deadline approaches, park officials are urging visitors to seize the opportunity to swim in the lake before it becomes inaccessible. The construction is a crucial step in maintaining the trail's integrity and ensuring safe access for future visitors.
