Man with difficult housing journey to move from Safe Rest Village to temporary shelter
Naresh Mall's journey through homelessness has taken a new turn as he prepares to move from a North Portland Safe Rest Village to a temporary shelter. Mall, who holds a college degree and works full time, found himself without stable housing after the hotel he managed closed. Once hopeful that the Safe Rest Village would lead to permanent housing, he faced ongoing challenges, including the exhaustion of available housing vouchers. This situation is compounded by significant budget shortfalls affecting homeless services in Multnomah County. With the Safe Rest Village scheduled to close in May, Mall expressed his fears of returning to the streets.
However, he is hopeful about the move to the Clinton Triangle Temporary Alternative Shelter Site, which he believes has better resources. Both shelter sites are managed by Urban Alchemy, and KATU is actively seeking answers from the city regarding the transfer of residents and future plans. The Peninsula Crossing Safe Rest Village is being closed to make way for new Habitat for Humanity homes, highlighting the pressing need for affordable housing solutions.
