Stitches for Hospice project brings dignity to patients in their final moments
The Stitches for Hospice project, spearheaded by Maggie Alberton and Rabbi Sarah Rensin, focuses on enhancing the dignity of hospice patients through community involvement in sewing essential items. Their collaboration with Positive Charge! PDX encourages local residents to create catheter covers and clothing protectors, which play a vital role in preserving patients' dignity during their final moments. Alberton articulates that dignity is akin to medicine, facilitating better coping mechanisms for patients facing life’s challenges. Rabbi Rensin highlights the emotional toll of losing independence, which many patients experience.
Positive Charge! PDX facilitates the project by providing the necessary supplies for community members, ensuring that anyone, regardless of their sewing skills, can participate. Donation boxes have been set up across Portland, making it convenient for individuals to drop off their handmade items. This initiative not only addresses the physical needs of patients but also cultivates a spirit of community care and support. By engaging in this project, residents contribute to a compassionate environment that values the dignity of every individual at the end of life.
