Some Washington school districts push for changes to how trans athletes can participate in sports

Portland, ORLocal News

In response to concerns about transgender athletes in school sports, several Washington school districts are advocating for new WIAA regulations. Currently, the WIAA allows participation based on gender identity, but Proposed Amendment No. 7 would ban transgender girls from competing in girls' sports to maintain fairness, citing potential physical advantages. This amendment is inspired by similar policies in Alaska. Additionally, Proposed Amendment No.

8 would establish an 'open division' for transgender athletes while restricting boys' and girls' sports to those assigned that sex at birth. This initiative follows a controversial victory by a transgender female athlete at the 2024 state track championships, which sparked local debates on equity in athletics. Justin Kesterson, WIAA's assistant executive director, noted that five schools supported the amendments to start this conversation. The final text of the proposed changes will be prepared by the end of January, with a decision expected in April, aiming to balance the dignity of all student athletes with concerns about competitive fairness.
