After special session, Oregon Department of Forestry quickly processes 88 million in wildland fire vendor payments

Portland, ORLocal News

The Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) has processed $88 million in vendor payments following the devastating 2024 wildfire season, which burned 1. 9 million acres, making it the state's most expensive fire season to date. This unprecedented situation prompted Governor Tina Kotek to convene a special legislative session to address the urgent funding shortfall. In response, lawmakers approved a significant $218 million bailout to support both ODF and the Oregon State Fire Marshal. Derek Gasperini of ODF highlighted the logistical challenges faced during the season, emphasizing the collaboration of thousands of firefighters and vendors in suppressing nearly 2,000 fires.

The legislative funding has been crucial for ensuring rapid payments to those who played essential roles in wildfire suppression. Looking ahead, ODF officials are advocating for changes in funding mechanisms to better prepare for future wildfire challenges. The swift action to compensate vendors is vital for maintaining readiness for wildfire responses, underscoring the critical need for sustainable funding as wildfires become increasingly complex and costly.
