West Salem residents urged to limit water use after major sewer main break

Portland, ORLocal News

A significant sewer main break in West Salem has led to an urgent request from city officials for residents to conserve water. The break, reported near Bowden Land and Trent Avenue, forced the closure of two sewer mains that transport wastewater to the Willow Lake Wastewater Treatment Plant. City crews have redirected flow and are currently repairing around 400 feet of the affected 18-inch sewer main, with work expected to continue through the night. Residents are encouraged to limit water use for non-essential activities, such as washing clothes and flushing toilets, to alleviate strain on the system and prevent further environmental impacts. Additionally, warnings have been issued against contact with nearby water sources due to potential bacterial contamination.

One of the two mains has been repaired and is undergoing testing, while work on the second main is scheduled to begin soon. The city is committed to keeping the public informed and has provided contact details for reporting any flooding issues. For ongoing updates, residents are directed to visit the city’s official website.
