Advisory Update Sewage Release to Woods Creek in Southwest Portland
Environmental Services reported that the sewage release affecting Woods Creek in Southwest Portland has stopped, leading to marked improvements in water quality. Observations and sampling on November 17 showed that creek conditions had improved compared to late October, with E. coli levels returning to baseline. The DEQ has been notified of these improvements, and staff will continue monitoring the site to ensure conditions remain stable. Warning signs will stay in place until it is deemed safe to reopen the area, with coordination ongoing with Portland Parks and Recreation.
The public is reminded that most sewage releases are preventable, primarily caused by clogged pipes from household debris, grease, and tree roots. To prevent future incidents, Environmental Services advises proper disposal of waste, including not flushing wet wipes and never pouring grease down drains. If a sewer overflow is observed, residents are encouraged to contact the City’s hotline. A final update will follow once further sampling confirms safety for public access.
