Portlanders Gather to Mourn and Demand Action on Day of Remembrance for Traffic Crash Victims
On November 19, 2025, around 80 Portland residents gathered at Luuwit View Park for the World Day of Remembrance, honoring victims of traffic violence. Families of those lost in traffic accidents spoke about their enduring grief, with Nathan Zietlow expressing that “grief is love” that never fades. In 2023, Portland recorded 69 traffic fatalities, raising concerns about road safety despite the city's 2015 commitment to eliminate traffic deaths. The event emphasized the theme of “safe speeds,” with discussions focused on addressing the issue of “super speeders. ” Advocates are pushing for the Oregon Legislature to enact laws promoting Intelligent Speed Assistance technology, which limits vehicle speeds based on GPS data.
This technology aims to prevent further tragedies by curbing speeding among high-risk drivers. Similar measures have been implemented successfully in Washington, D. C. , Virginia, and Washington state. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration supports this technology as an effective means to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries.
