Sweating Out the Fascism With Anti-ICE Aerobics
On November 9, participants held an aerobics class outside Portland's ICE facility as part of a protest against the agency's actions. The “Sweating out the Fascists” event attracted about 20 individuals who donned neon leotards and danced to '80s tunes, contrasting sharply with the serious nature of the federal officers' presence nearby. Jennifer, an instructor, noted that the fun atmosphere aimed to challenge negative perceptions of the city while highlighting the need for community solidarity. Federal officers responded by monitoring from the roof and firing pepper balls at nearby protestors. Organizer Karen Werstein expressed frustration over ICE's strong presence, stating the need to transform that energy into a joyful protest.
The event is part of a larger series of creative protests against ICE in Portland, which has included various activities like dance lessons and crochet classes. Historically, such protests draw inspiration from activist figures like Jane Fonda, who combined fitness and activism. The aerobics class not only served as a protest but also aimed to foster community engagement in a light-hearted manner.
