Amid Months of Contentious Bargaining, PSU Adjunct Union Wins Unfair Labor Practice Case
Portland State University’s adjunct faculty union, PSUFA, won an unfair labor practice case against the university for withholding essential benefit funds during ongoing contract negotiations. The Oregon Employee Relations Board ruled that these funds must be provided to adjuncts, even after the expiration of the previous contract on June 30. This decision highlights PSU's obligations to maintain benefits for union employees, contrasting with PSU's assertion that resolving the issue at the bargaining table was appropriate. Union members expressed significant financial stress, with instructor Gina Rose citing her reliance on the funds amid personal challenges. Dan Howell, another adjunct, criticized PSU for perpetuating a cycle of exploitation rather than valuing adjunct labor.
PSU maintained that their approach was a good-faith effort, denying allegations of union-busting. Erica Thomas, PSUFA’s co-chair, condemned PSU’s actions as anti-union, noting a troubling history of union avoidance by PSU President Ann Cudd. This ruling not only impacts current negotiations but also sets a precedent for future labor relations at the university.
