The Portland Water Bureau confirmed the detection of one Cryptosporidium oocyst in the Bull Run Watershed during routine monitoring on October 12, 2025. This watershed serves as the primary drinking water source for Portland. Health officials have reassured customers that no additional precautions are needed at this time. The Bureau is required to implement water treatment for Cryptosporidium and is on track to install a filtration system by September 30, 2027, as mandated by the Oregon Health Authority. Current measures include enhanced watershed protection and ongoing monitoring to safeguard public health.

Cryptosporidium exposure can lead to cryptosporidiosis, particularly affecting those with weakened immune systems. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends that immunocompromised individuals consult their healthcare providers about tap water safety. Customers can access sampling results and contact the Water Quality Line for further inquiries.
