October 2025 Newsletter from the Office of Community-based Police Accountability
The Community Board for Police Accountability (CBPA) in Portland is undergoing background checks before officially starting its work, following appointments on June 18, 2025. Members have begun their required training, which includes specialized sessions on city laws, police procedures, and de-escalation techniques. If any member fails the background checks, they will be replaced by a new appointee to maintain the board's integrity. Training involves a ride-along with the Portland Police Bureau and participation in the Community Academy, which provides practical insights into police operations. The CBPA is currently full and not accepting new members; however, the Portland Committee on Community Engaged Policing is recruiting for members to focus on police policy reform.
This recruitment aims to address use-of-force issues and interactions with individuals perceived to have mental health conditions. The initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance accountability and build trust between the police and the community. Ongoing training may also include mental health first aid and trauma-informed care.
