Cryptosporidium monitoring update

Portland, ORLocal News

The Portland Water Bureau detected a single Cryptosporidium oocyst in a 50-liter sample from the Bull Run Watershed on September 28, with no detections on September 30. While customers are not required to take additional precautions currently, the bureau is working to meet drinking water regulations by installing filtration systems by September 2027. Cryptosporidium can cause cryptosporidiosis, leading to severe gastrointestinal symptoms, especially among immunocompromised individuals. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates a small portion of the population could experience gastrointestinal illness from the microorganism. The bureau has implemented interim measures, including enhanced watershed protections and monitoring to safeguard public health.

Public health officials have assessed that immediate precautions are unnecessary for most customers. Those who are immunocompromised are advised to consult with healthcare professionals about tap water safety. For further information on water quality, residents can contact the Water Quality Line at 503-823-7525.
