Portlanders Join Flotilla Aiming to Break Israel's Blockade of Aid to Gaza

Portland, ORLocal News

Portland residents Paul Reid and Stephen have set sail with the Global Sumud Flotilla, aiming to deliver crucial aid to Gaza amid Israel's blockade. The flotilla has encountered numerous challenges, including rough seas and drone strikes, as it navigates the Mediterranean Sea. Reid emphasized their mission's importance, stating that they feel a responsibility to act where world leaders have failed. The United Nations indicates that over half of Gaza's population is experiencing famine due to the blockade, highlighting the dire humanitarian situation. The flotilla, which departed Spanish ports on August 31, hopes to bypass Israeli barriers to deliver aid by sea.

Previous attempts to reach Gaza by boat have been intercepted, making this mission particularly significant. Reid's determination reflects a broader call for action in support of Palestinian rights. The flotilla's ongoing journey aims to raise awareness and deliver a message that the siege must end.
