Emerald Ash Borer Found in Portland

Portland, ORLocal News

The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), a destructive invasive insect, has been confirmed in Portland after its initial detection in Oregon in 2022. Traps in six new locations, including the David Douglas Aquatics Center, revealed signs of infestation, such as thin canopies and serpentine gallery marks. The City of Portland has been proactive, removing ash trees from its approved street tree list in 2019 and implementing a detailed response plan earlier this summer. This plan focuses on treating healthy trees, removing those in poor condition, and simplifying the management process for residents with ash trees. Local residents can contribute by identifying infested trees and reporting them to the Oregon Invasive Species Council Hotline.

They can also utilize insecticides, which are highly effective when applied by licensed professionals. Without treatment, ash trees face inevitable infestation, prompting the need for replacement. The city's efforts aim to mitigate the spread and protect the urban forest.
