PSU Sheds Staff After Expedited Return-To-Office Requirement

Portland, ORLocal News

Portland State University (PSU) staff must return to in-person work five days a week by November 17, 2025, marking a drastic shift from a previously established September 2026 timeline. Many employees, including Janet Albarrado, voice concerns about the financial implications of this mandate, suggesting that it prioritizes downtown economic vibrancy over their wellbeing. Albarrado, who lives nearly 150 miles away, may need to relocate to keep her job, while Nick Crivello emphasizes the distress this decision causes for many staff members. He describes the initiative as the most disruptive he has seen in his career. PSU's policy allows few exceptions, disregarding personal circumstances such as caregiving or commuting hardships.

The university's stance aligns with Portland's broader effort to enhance downtown foot traffic by encouraging businesses to bring workers back to the office. The decision has sparked significant concern among employees regarding their financial stability and quality of life. With about 5,200 employees, PSU's return-to-office mandate poses challenges for many staff members navigating the transition.
