65 Years in the Making Renovations at Veterans Memorial Coliseum Lift Up Beloved Community Venue

Portland, ORLocal News

The Veterans Memorial Coliseum (VMC) in Portland will undergo a comprehensive renovation from 2024 to 2026, aimed at modernizing facilities while enhancing accessibility for all visitors. This project, funded through City bonds backed by tourism taxes, represents a successful public-private partnership with Rip City Management. Karl Lisle, the City's Spectator Venues Manager, highlighted the importance of these upgrades, which will include new seating, restrooms, and improved ADA accessibility. Councilor Dan Ryan noted the positive economic impact on the surrounding area as fans return for events. The renovations will also modernize the venue's rigging system and improve back-of-house facilities for performers.

The VMC, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has a rich history, hosting events since 1960. As part of the renovations, the venue will see increased restroom facilities, particularly for women, and single-user restrooms for privacy. These enhancements reflect the city's ongoing commitment to creating an inclusive and accessible environment for all attendees.
