Trump administration officials discuss DC police federalization, ICE efforts in city
Todd Lyons, Acting Director of ICE, confirmed that U. S. immigration enforcement is now collaborating with the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D. C. Lyons stated that since the federal takeover of MPD, over 70% of those detained by ICE have criminal histories, focusing efforts on serious offenders like gang members and sex offenders.
He emphasized that ICE prioritizes targeted enforcement based on intelligence rather than random inquiries about immigration status. The agency has broadened its approach under the current administration, stating that even individuals without criminal records may be apprehended if they are found during targeted operations. Immigration advocates caution that those in the U. S. illegally should avoid associating with criminals to minimize their risk of deportation.
This federal involvement comes as D. C. gears up for a year-long celebration of the nation's 250th birthday. The capital will also host numerous international events, including FIFA World Cup activities. Lyons reiterated the commitment to address public safety by removing criminal aliens from communities nationwide.
