A fire erupted in a garbage can at Chapman Elementary in Portland, spreading to a dumpster early Tuesday, the first day of school. Despite a custodian's efforts to quell the flames with a fire extinguisher, the fire reignited, necessitating a response from the fire department. Thankfully, no one was injured, and the school building remained undamaged, allowing classes to commence as scheduled.
