A fire erupted in a garbage can at Chapman Elementary in Portland, spreading to a dumpster early Tuesday, the first day of school. Despite a custodian's efforts to quell the flames with a fire extinguisher, the fire reignited, necessitating a response from the fire department. Thankfully, no one was injured, and the school building remained undamaged, allowing classes to commence as scheduled. Superintendent Dr. Kimberlee Armstrong participated in welcoming students, riding the bus and distributing school supplies to foster connections with the community.
