Two years later Lessons in Preparedness from the Camp Creek Fire
The Portland Water Bureau is set to construct a new water filtration facility to enhance the resilience of the Bull Run Watershed, which serves as Portland's primary drinking water source. This proactive measure follows the significant impacts of the Camp Creek Fire, which burned over 2,000 acres two years ago. Interim Director Quisha Light highlighted the importance of these investments to mitigate future risks and avoid increased costs. The new facility will filter out sediment and harmful microorganisms, ensuring safe drinking water even after extreme weather events or wildfires. Currently, the Bull Run supply remains unfiltered, leading to potential contamination during adverse conditions.
The filtration system will also help the bureau comply with federal and state drinking water regulations. The project is expected to be completed by September 2027, ensuring a more reliable water supply for the community. Investments in both the filtration facility and groundwater systems will work together to improve overall water quality and accessibility.
