Multnomah County declares emergency as extreme heat looms this weekend
Multnomah County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson declared a state of emergency on August 22 due to a heat wave expected to reach over 100 degrees through August 25. Cooling centers will operate from noon to 9 p. m. on Friday and Saturday at Multnomah County East in Gresham and Stephen’s Shelter in Portland. Three libraries will extend their hours until 8 p.
m. on Friday to provide refuge from the heat. TriMet will offer free rides for individuals traveling to cooling centers, ensuring accessibility for those in need. The county is actively engaging with property managers and vulnerable populations to raise awareness about the risks associated with extreme heat. Officials highlight that heat can be particularly dangerous for men over 50, veterans, and those living alone without air conditioning.
Multnomah County collaborates with organizations like Meals on Wheels to promote safety and awareness. Residents are encouraged to check on neighbors and assist those in heat distress, as heat-related illnesses can escalate quickly.
