Early garbage pickup on hot days

Portland, ORLocal News

Portland will begin earlier waste collection on hot days to prioritize the safety of collection drivers. Residents must set their garbage, recycling, and compost bins at the curb the night before their scheduled pickup. For instance, on Friday, August 22, 2025, collection may start before 6 a. m. if temperatures are predicted to reach 95 degrees or above.

Gregory Moore, district manager for Waste Connections, stated that this practice is vital for keeping drivers safe during their long shifts in hot trucks. The city allows garbage companies to adjust collection times to protect their employees from extreme heat. This initiative not only ensures timely pickups but also promotes the health and safety of those working in challenging conditions. The policy demonstrates Portland's commitment to public safety and employee welfare. Residents are encouraged to cooperate by following the guidelines to avoid missed pickups.
