New chief takes charge at Portland Fire Rescue
Lauren Johnson was sworn in as chief of the Portland Fire & Rescue Bureau today, making history as the fourth woman to hold this position. She will oversee more than 750 employees and manage a $213 million operational budget while serving over 580,000 residents in Portland. In her acceptance speech, Johnson emphasized her commitment to earning the trust of her team and providing selfless service. Mayor Keith Wilson praised her leadership experience and strategic vision for enhancing public safety in the city. Interim Deputy City Administrator Bob Cozzie expressed optimism about Johnson's collaborative approach to public safety initiatives.
Johnson brings 26 years of experience from the Dallas Fire Department, where she implemented vital programs in safety and mental health. She is also an instructor for the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service and is set to graduate with a master's degree in public service and administration. Johnson's leadership is seen as a pivotal moment for Portland Fire & Rescue as the department continues to adapt to the city's growth.
