Efforts to restore the historic Washington Park and Zoo Railway are back on track

Portland, ORLocal News

The historic Washington Park and Zoo Railway, a miniature train that has been a cornerstone of Portland's community since 1958, is set for restoration after years of inactivity. This beloved 5/8 scale train once carried millions of passengers through Washington Park, creating cherished childhood memories for many. Speaking on the project's historical significance, Kathy Goeddel, president of the Friends of the Washington Park and Zoo Railway, noted that over half of the funding for the original construction came from local community efforts, including children selling stock certificates. The railway's route was designed to connect various attractions, including the Oregon Zoo, which was built around the train layout. Although the train has been silent since its closure in 2013 due to zoo construction, there are renewed efforts to revive it.

The potential reopening signifies a commitment to preserving Portland's history and fostering community pride. As restoration progresses, local supporters are hopeful that the train will once again be a vibrant part of Washington Park. This revival could serve as a reminder of the ingenuity and community spirit that defined the railway's original creation.
