City of Portland Expands Day Center Capacity with Two New Partnerships, Including Innovative Outdoor Site

Portland, ORLocal News

Portland's City government has launched two partnerships aimed at increasing day center capacity for the homeless, including the innovative NW Glisan Oasis Day Center, the city's first outdoor space dedicated to this purpose. The Oasis model, developed by Urban Alchemy, focuses on providing trauma-informed services and creating a welcoming environment for individuals experiencing homelessness. This facility will offer critical amenities such as restrooms and showers, along with connections to housing and health services. JOIN, a local nonprofit, will expand its existing day center hours and services, further enhancing support for those in need. Mayor Keith Wilson noted that these efforts are part of a larger strategy to ensure everyone feels they belong in the community.

Dr. Lena Miller of Urban Alchemy highlighted the model’s success in other cities, emphasizing its potential to engage vulnerable populations effectively. The City’s commitment to work with established organizations aims to improve both the capacity and quality of support available. This initiative represents a significant step forward in providing essential resources and pathways to stability for Portland's homeless population.
