Portland Mayor Mandates Compliance With Trump Policies in Effort to Retain Federal Funds

Portland, ORLocal News

Mayor Keith Wilson of Portland issued an executive order mandating compliance with federal anti-discrimination laws as part of a strategy to retain about $31 million in federal funding. The order affects approximately 75 city programs and policies, necessitating adjustments to ensure equitable access for all Portlanders. Wilson's decision follows his earlier discussions about the potential consequences of non-compliance with federal mandates aimed at dismantling DEI initiatives. Before finalizing the order, he consulted with community leaders, including Governor Tina Kotek, to gauge their feedback. The city currently manages $349 million in active federal grants, primarily for housing and transportation projects.

Wilson emphasized that losing federal funding would negatively impact vulnerable populations served by these programs. The executive order prohibits preferential treatment based on race or gender, though exceptions exist if a disparity study supports such preferences. Wilson reaffirmed the city's dedication to its values of diversity, equity, and inclusion, despite the federal requirements.
