July Newsletter Livability in the Pearl, SDC Waiver Passes, Parks Levy to Ballot, more

Portland, ORLocal News

The Portland City Council plans to open a new shelter in the Pearl District, prompting significant community feedback regarding livability. Mayor Wilson and Governor Kotek's System Development Charge waiver aims to expedite the construction of 5,000 new homes, reflecting a proactive approach to housing needs. The Council unanimously approved this initiative, with Councilor Eric Zimmerman emphasizing the importance of a responsive issue reporting system and local enforcement to maintain neighborhood quality. Concerns were raised about the shelter’s early morning exit time, which could disrupt residents' routines. Moreover, the Council voted to advance a Parks Levy renewal to the November ballot, where Zimmerman pushed for improved restroom facilities.

Although his amendment did not succeed, he continued to advocate for the Levy to ensure critical park services. Zimmerman also began highlighting local businesses and parks to promote community engagement. He encourages residents to support these entities, reinforcing the importance of keeping Portland's unique character intact.
