Train accident claims life of 66-year-old man in Salem

A train in Salem struck and killed a 66-year-old man walking on the tracks near McGilchrist Street on Saturday morning. Union Pacific personnel reported the collision to Salem Police around 11:00 a. m. The train crew attempted to alert the man using various measures but could not stop the train in time, leading to the fatal incident. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and authorities withheld his name pending family notification.

Streets were closed to traffic between McGilchrist Street and Mill Street SE until approximately 2:30 p. m. as officials cleared the area. The incident underscores ongoing concerns about pedestrian safety near train tracks in urban environments. Salem has experienced similar incidents in the past, highlighting the need for improved safety measures.

Local authorities may evaluate existing signage and safety protocols to prevent future tragedies.
