City launches laundry program serving people experiencing homelessness

Portland, ORLocal News

The Wash House in Portland, launched in September 2024, serves individuals experiencing homelessness by providing essential laundry services. Funded by the Impact Reduction Program, the facility employs participants from the GLITTER program, which supports those with barriers to employment. Program Analyst Katie Lindsay stressed the importance of hygiene access, stating that clean clothing significantly impacts health outcomes. Customers can drop off one bag of laundry per day, with clean items ready for pick-up typically within a day. The facility also launders textiles collected through GLITTER's trash collection efforts, addressing the significant textile waste that contributes to landfill issues.

Last fiscal year, over 5,700 tons of trash were collected by IRP crews, with textiles comprising a substantial portion. The Wash House not only improves hygiene and job access but also fosters sustainability by reducing waste. This multifaceted approach offers a practical solution to the pressing needs of the homeless community while benefiting the environment.
