Portland Water Bureau to activate groundwater system

Portland, ORLocal News

On July 22, 2025, the Portland Water Bureau begins blending groundwater from the Columbia South Shore Well Field into the city’s drinking water supply to address summer demand. This action responds to a particularly dry spring and forecasts of hot weather. Interim Director Quisha Light highlighted the bureau's commitment to monitoring water levels and customer usage to ensure sufficient supply. The blended water will take up to two weeks to reach homes and businesses. The Columbia South Shore Well Field, sourced from deep aquifers, meets or exceeds federal and state drinking water standards.

This proactive measure aims to maintain safe, clean water for the community until fall rains return. Customers can sign up for notifications regarding significant operational changes. For questions, residents are encouraged to contact the Water Quality Line at 503-823-7525.
