Man indicted on attempted murder, arson, bias crime charges in Portland apartment fire

Portland, ORLocal News

A grand jury indicted Shaun Michael Szwarz on multiple serious charges, including four counts of attempted murder and seven counts of first-degree arson, after a fire at an apartment complex in Portland's Hazelwood neighborhood. The fire, which occurred on July 11, injured several residents, with two individuals hospitalized for severe burns and fractures. Firefighters rescued eight people, while at least four others jumped to safety, including an 82-year-old woman. Witnesses reported that Szwarz yelled racial slurs from his window shortly before the fire started, raising concerns about a bias crime. Szwarz, who lived in the 19-unit complex, pleaded not guilty during his court appearance.

The incident displaced twelve residents from six different units, prompting assistance from the Red Cross for temporary housing. Authorities have emphasized the serious nature of the charges, given the life-threatening circumstances of the fire. This case highlights ongoing issues of safety and community relations within the area.
