New residential garbage rates, collection schedules, mattress recycling, and more

Portland, ORLocal News

Portland residents will experience a monthly increase in garbage bills ranging from $1. 55 to $2. 05, driven by inflation and rising disposal costs. The charges vary based on the size of the garbage container, which can be modified by contacting the respective garbage service provider. Property owners of residential rental properties are required to establish and finance garbage service for their tenants.

The city has implemented a new law allowing residents to recycle mattresses for free at select drop-off locations, with a significant portion of the mattress materials able to be reused. Community Warehouse, a nonprofit organization, accepts clean and usable mattresses for donation, which aids community members in need. Households received a 12-month garbage collection schedule via mail in June, and can print custom collection calendars from the city’s website. Additionally, residents can sign up for reminders about garbage collection days through email, text, or phone notifications. This initiative aims to improve waste management practices and support community recycling efforts.
