Rip City rekindles past WNBA team name Portland Fire

Portland, ORLocal News

On July 15, 2025, the Portland Fire revealed its name and logo, marking a significant step in reintroducing professional women's basketball to Portland. Clare Hamill, the interim president, highlighted the city's long-standing support for women's sports and the goal of reconnecting with the global basketball community. The new logo features typography shaped by Portland's bridges and a silhouette of Mount Hood, symbolizing local pride. While many fans celebrate the return, a poll showed that over 50% of respondents preferred a different name, reflecting mixed feelings about reviving the Fire brand from the team's previous iteration, which ended in 2002. The team aims to honor its legacy while creating a fresh identity moving forward.

The "Rose on Fire" emblem, central to the logo, represents pride and resilience. The Fire plans to tip off its inaugural game next summer, rekindling the city's passion for basketball. This development signifies a renewed commitment to women's sports in Portland.
