Fireworks 911 call times improve on July 4th thanks to new reporting tool
Portland's new online fireworks reporting tool has successfully reduced 911 calls by 13% on July 4th, allowing emergency responders to better manage critical incidents. The tool received 4,590 reports this season, providing valuable data for tracking fireworks hotspots and informing public safety campaigns. Fireworks-related fires decreased this year, with only 9 reported on July 4th and a total of 27 during the fireworks season, compared to 14 and 29 the previous year. Average wait times for 911 calls improved significantly, dropping from 26 seconds in 2024 to just 8 seconds in 2025. Emergency officials stress the importance of compliance with the city’s fireworks ban, which has been challenging to enforce since its enactment in 2022.
Rick Graves, public information officer for Portland Fire & Rescue, urged community members to respect the ban for the safety of all. The data collected will assist public safety partners in targeting fire-safety education efforts in areas with frequent fireworks reports. Volunteers also contributed to cleanup efforts in parks and beaches after July 4th celebrations, showcasing community engagement.
