Construction on the Thompson Elk Fountain is underway
Construction on the Thompson Elk Fountain in Portland commenced on July 7, 2025, as part of a restoration effort for the historic landmark. The Portland Water Bureau reported that crews will first set up equipment and fencing before removing the fountain base and boulders. A new stainless-steel vault and plumbing for a recirculating water pump will be installed, which is projected to save over 6. 8 million gallons of water annually. The bronze Elk statue, originally commissioned by former Mayor David P.
Thompson in 1900, was designed to provide an accessible watering place for wildlife and humans. It is the second oldest sculpture in the Portland metropolitan area and is part of the city's public art collection, which includes more than 1,700 works. The restoration project also involves repairing the statue and restoring historic granite. Local residents are encouraged to check the Portland Water Bureau's website for updates and potential traffic impacts during construction. This project highlights Portland's commitment to preserving its cultural heritage while promoting water conservation.
