211 hotline cuts hours, keeps extended childcare and emergency services amid funding cuts

Portland, ORLocal News

The 211info hotline, which serves Oregon and Southwest Washington, has cut its operating hours to weekdays from 8 a. m. to 6 p. m. due to financial constraints facing the social services sector.

CEO Dan Herman explained that the organization experienced budget reductions and could not secure legislative funding in the recent session. Despite the reduction, 211info will maintain expanded hours for its childcare services program and will activate additional hours during emergencies or severe weather. Herman pointed out that 37% of contacts occurred outside the new core hours, indicating significant demand for the service. The hotline has operated 24/7 for nearly four years, primarily relying on self-funding. Herman expressed hope that state lawmakers will recognize the service's value in future budget considerations.

He encouraged community members to continue using 211info and explore alternative communication methods, such as texting. This change reflects broader financial challenges within social service organizations in the region.
