City taps longtime assistant chief from Dallas to lead Portland Fire Rescue

Lauren Johnson will assume the role of chief of the Portland Fire & Rescue Bureau on August 18, marking a key leadership appointment in the city's evolving government structure. Currently an assistant fire chief in Dallas, Johnson has dedicated 26 years to fire service. Mayor Keith Wilson emphasized her extensive experience and ability to foster public safety. Interim Chief AJ Jackson will support Johnson during her two-month transition period. Johnson will oversee 744 employees and manage a budget of nearly $200 million.

She plans to immerse herself in department operations and connect with community leaders. Johnson holds various professional certifications and will complete her Masters in Public Service Administration by December 2025. She and her family look forward to exploring Portland’s outdoor activities and culinary scene.
