Portland Police identify man who died in custody during welfare check call

Police in Portland have identified Damon Lamarr Johnson, 52, who died in custody during a welfare check on June 27 in the Kenton Neighborhood. Officers responded to a call reporting that Johnson was flooding his apartment and hanging knives out of a window. While en route, police requested paramedics to stage nearby. After arriving, officers initiated CPR and transported Johnson to the hospital, where he later died. The interaction details between Johnson and the officers remain undisclosed, and three officers have been placed on routine administrative leave.

Johnson's cause of death is still pending determination by the medical examiner. A spokesperson emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that a thorough review by the District Attorney will follow. Bodycam footage is anticipated to be released within 14 days, and officials urge anyone with information to contact the police.
