Preschool for All Advocates Put Kotek and State Legislators on Notice

Portland, ORLocal News

Oregon's Senate is considering an amendment to Senate Bill 106 that could lead to the termination of the Preschool for All program by 2027. This initiative, which provides free preschool funded by a tax on high earners, was approved by 64% of Multnomah County voters in 2020. Families like Riley McPhee's have praised its impact, claiming it has allowed them to avoid exorbitant daycare costs. Advocates express outrage over the lack of public comment regarding the proposed legislative changes. In response to the pushback, more than 35,000 supporters have sent letters to state lawmakers urging them to protect the program.

The proposal surfaced amid concerns voiced by Governor Tina Kotek and other state officials about the program's sustainability. As the end of the legislative session approaches, the fate of Senate Bill 106 remains uncertain, but advocates are vigilant against potential threats. Multnomah County leaders reaffirm their commitment to supporting families through initiatives like Preschool for All.
