City rate increases go into effect on July 1

Portland, ORLocal News

The Portland City Council approved a 6. 34% increase in residential water, sewer, and stormwater rates effective July 1, 2025, resulting in an average monthly bill increase of $9. 55. This decision responds to a substantial $150 million budget deficit and emphasizes the need for essential maintenance of the city’s aging infrastructure, with many underground pipes over 80 years old. The city aims to invest in preventative maintenance, as every dollar spent can save up to $10 in future reconstruction costs.

Other municipal fees, such as permit and parking fees, will also rise, with parking rates increasing by 40 to 60 cents per hour depending on the district. Some fees, however, will decrease, including those related to underground storage tank removal. Moreover, Portland Parks & Recreation will increase golf fees, though specific amounts are still uncertain. The adjustments reflect the city government’s commitment to maintaining reliable services without generating profit. These changes will support vital services that Portlanders depend on daily, ensuring safety and sustainability for generations to come.
