Everyday Heroes PCC graduate overcomes obstacles to pursue performance dreams
Sofia Nava Ulacio, a 21-year-old graduate from Portland Community College, has turned her challenging past in Venezuela into a source of inspiration through music. After joining El Sistema, a prestigious youth music program, at age 12, she found her passion for the guitar, cello, and composition. Graduating high school with a 4. 0 GPA, she embraced new opportunities at PCC, where her talents were recognized by faculty, including Director Samuel Barbara. Ulacio took the initiative to establish the Rock Creek Choir Club to make music accessible, especially for those facing financial barriers.
Additionally, she served as vice chair of the Beaverton Arts Commission and offered private lessons to youth, furthering her commitment to the arts. Her journey culminated in her graduation as a President's List scholar, and she will pursue a bachelor's degree in Music Performance at Lewis and Clark College on a full-ride scholarship this fall. Ulacio aims to become a role model for young women in the music industry, demonstrating that dreams are achievable despite obstacles. Her story highlights the power of perseverance and community support in shaping futures.
