City Closes on Kitsap Bank Property Acquisition for New Community Center

Port Orchard, WALocal News

Port Orchard city officials have announced the successful acquisition of the Kitsap Bank waterfront property at 619 Bay Street for $2. 5 million, a key milestone in the redevelopment of the downtown area. This acquisition is integral to the establishment of the South Kitsap Community Events Center, which will serve as a hub for local gatherings and include a new branch of the Kitsap Regional Library. The funding for this significant project was sourced from a $1 million contribution by the Kitsap Public Facilities District, $1. 2 million from the state legislature, and $300,000 in local funds.

As part of the deal, Kitsap Bank will lease back their current location while constructing a new regional headquarters on adjacent property, a process projected to take four years. Mayor Rob Putaansuu highlighted the collaborative efforts with Kitsap Bank as essential to the project's success. The city is currently assessing cost estimates based on schematic designs provided by Rice Fergus Miller, an architectural and planning firm. This community center is anticipated to enhance local resources and provide versatile event spaces for both large and small gatherings. As Port Orchard continues to develop its waterfront, this project stands as a testament to the city's commitment to community development and revitalization.
