The collision occurred early Saturday morning at the intersection of 16th Street and Camelback Road when Smith reportedly ran a red light, striking Mares' vehicle. Upon police arrival, they found Mares with severe injuries, and despite life-saving efforts by fire personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Following the crash, Smith fled on foot but later returned to confess his involvement to authorities. He was treated for his injuries at a local hospital before being taken into custody on multiple charges, including manslaughter and fleeing the scene of a fatal accident.

Sgt. Robert Scherer of the Phoenix police provided details about the case, noting that Smith's vehicle remained at the scene.
