Tempe Police Department launches new forensic unit after persistent problems

Phoenix, AZLocal News

The Tempe Police Department has relaunched its forensics unit after a significant internal review in 2021 identified critical issues, including reliance on expired materials and insufficient training. Chief Kenneth McCoy stated the department invested approximately $180,000 to rebuild the unit, which now features fully trained specialists with advanced degrees in forensic science. The overhaul included a review of over 400 cases, with no evidence found that compromised the integrity of past investigations. The department temporarily contracted Mesa to process new evidence while training its staff. About 80 reviewed cases were sent to Mesa, with some flagged for discrepancies in fingerprint evidence.

The changes come after years of problems that persisted despite being acknowledged by leadership. The new unit aims to enhance the credibility and effectiveness of forensic work in Tempe. McCoy expressed confidence in the new team's capabilities and commitment to serving the community.
