Why is American Airlines canceling flights in Phoenix? Here's what we know

Phoenix, AZLocal News

American Airlines is set to reduce its flight schedule between Phoenix and Chicago O'Hare International Airport by 30 flights in August, according to Cirium data. The airline's adjustments are part of a broader industry trend, as airlines typically publish schedules 330 days in advance and refine them as the departure date approaches. More than 80 routes from O'Hare will operate with fewer flights or seats starting in August. American's spokesman stated that these cuts reflect the finalized schedule made 100 days prior to the flights. Historical factors contributing to schedule cuts include low demand and staffing shortages.

Additionally, American Airlines has announced new routes from O'Hare, including a service to Naples, Italy that commenced in May. Cirium reported approximately 800 flights canceled for August, amounting to a loss of about 76,000 seats across various routes. In September and October, Phoenix is expected to lose 25 and 57 flights, respectively, along with significant seat reductions.
