Kroger truckers, mechanics in Tolleson fear 130 jobs could be cut. Here's why
Kroger's decision to cancel its contract with Ruan Transport Corporation may result in job losses for about 130 truck drivers and mechanics at its Tolleson distribution center. The Teamsters union alleges that this move is retaliation for their opposition to Kroger's failed merger with Albertsons. The contract included a clause that allowed Kroger to opt out with 90 days' notice, which it did, opting to hire Swift Transportation instead. Many affected employees have long tenures, with some working at the facility for over 26 years, making the prospect of starting anew daunting. Despite efforts from the Teamsters and Ruan to retain the contract, they were unable to convince Kroger to reverse its decision.
According to Ruan, 144 employees could lose their jobs, and only three drivers have been placed in new roles. A Fry’s spokesperson indicated that the company regularly evaluates vendor partnerships, and the transition aims to minimize disruption. The Teamsters are seeking political support to address the layoffs and pressure Kroger to reconsider.
