This stretch of Arizona highway is known by locals as the 'corridor of chaos'

Phoenix, AZLocal News

U. S. Route 191, known locally as the "Morenci 500," has become notorious for its high rate of accidents, prompting authorities to intensify enforcement efforts. In 2024, the Arizona Department of Safety documented nearly 60 non-injury collisions and 35 injuries on this highway, which serves the Morenci copper mine and surrounding areas. Sheriff Eric Ellison, who prioritized traffic safety during his campaign, highlighted that reckless driving has reached alarming levels, particularly during morning and evening rush hours.

Local officials reported that many drivers frequently exceed the speed limit by 20 mph or more, contributing to the highway's dangerous reputation. In response to a rise in complaints, Ellison's office has partnered with the Graham County Sheriff's Office and the Arizona Department of Public Safety to implement supplemental patrols. The zero-tolerance policy mandates that anyone caught driving criminally—defined as exceeding the speed limit by 20 mph or more—will face arrest and vehicle towing. A recent incident involving a speeding driver exemplifies the challenges faced by law enforcement, as deputies struggle with staffing shortages. Local authorities remain committed to enhancing safety measures and reducing the number of accidents on this perilous stretch of road.
