Dr. Palak Raval-Nelson, Philadelphia's health commissioner, declared a heat health emergency effective June 22 through June 25, 2025, in response to forecasted high heat index values. The emergency declaration activates various city programs aimed at protecting vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly, who are at increased risk of heat-related illnesses. Residents are urged to seek air-conditioned environments, either by visiting cooling centers or friends and family with AC. The PCA heat hotline will be operational from noon to 8:30 PM on June 22 and from 8:30 AM to 8:30 PM on the following days.

The city will also suspend water service shutoffs during this period. In addition, community outreach teams will assist the homeless to stay safe during the heat. The city encourages residents to check on elderly neighbors and loved ones to ensure their safety. The heat emergency highlights the need for proactive measures to safeguard public health during extreme weather events.
