Title Clearance Unit Helps Cobbs Creek Sisters Stay in Beloved Community

Philadelphia, PALocal News

Constance Neal and Alfreda Wortham secured legal ownership of their family home in Cobbs Creek, Philadelphia, thanks to the Title Clearance Unit (TCU). After their mother passed away in 2020, the sisters faced a daunting challenge in untangling the title, which left them without access to essential benefits like property tax relief. They struggled for years, receiving little guidance from various sources until Ms. Neal responded to an invitation from the Register of Wills. TCU Director Myasia Williams provided personalized assistance, which the sisters found invaluable.

Councilmember Jamie Gauthier expressed relief over their successful title resolution, noting that tangled titles are a prevalent issue in her district. “This office is a godsend,” Ms. Neal remarked, reflecting on the TCU's impact. The TCU, formed in 2024 by Register John Sabatina, aims to assist others in similar situations by completing the probate process and providing access to additional support programs. The sisters’ experience underscores the importance of legal assistance in maintaining family homes and community ties.
